What are Alcohol Inks?

When I tell people that I’m painting with alcohol inks, I often hear, “Are you drinking wine while painting?” Well, maybe. Alcohol inks are alcohol-based, highly pigmented ink that can be diluted with rubbing alcohol. I use 91% isopropyl alcohol to paint with the ink. The isopropyl alcohol is used to blend the colors, dilute the ink, and clean up. Blending solution is also available. It contains alcohol and glycerin to enhance the blending.

I use Jacquard Piñata inks or Ranger Adirondack alcohol inks. They come in many brilliant colors. Alcohol inks work best on any non-porous surface including glass, metal, plastic, ceramic, stone, leather, resin and more. When working with alcohol inks, it’s important to have good ventilation so that you don’t get a headache or adverse health effects.

I love working with alcohol inks. They are brilliant, vibrant colors which have a mind of their own.
